Orkestra Melayu Singapura (Singapore Malay Orchestra) Music Director: Amri Amin Audition for New Members 2010 We are now recruiting for new members for 2010. Players come from all over Singapore in a cause to experience and perform Malay music of various genres. Orkestra Melayu Singapura (OMS) consists of various wings namely, the youth wing, traditional ensemble and gamelan, all under the artistic direction of specialists in their respective fields. The youth wing, OMS (Youth) provides intensive training to members who are inexperience in the understanding of Malay music literature. The members receive expert tuition from current professional orchestra players. The orchestra meet regularly for intensive rehearsals/sectionals for annual concert and performances. The OMS is under the direction of Amri Amin and Mohd Jais Minsawi. AUDITIONS 2010
Audition Venue M.A.D Studios (ALUN Studio) @ WHO MAY APPLY? The orchestra is for anyone with proficiency in their respective musical instrument and to learn and perform Malay music literature in an orchestra setting. Posting to various wings will be based on audition outcome. HOW TO APPLY? Please fill in the Audition Application Form and e-mail us the completed form. Print the completed form with signature(s) and bring it along with you to the audition. You will be informed of the audition date via e-mail. WHAT TO PLAY AT THE AUDITION? The audition is important to enable us to find out more about you and your instrumental proficiency. The audition will last around 15 to 30 minutes. You will need to prepare two contrasting pieces and to expect some sight-reading. We will not provide accompanist. Our staffs will be there to help, ensuring time to warm up and put you at ease. WHAT TO BRING FOR THE AUDITION? Please bring along the completed and signed application form together with your audition pieces/studies. Audition instruments are available for you during audition. However, you may want to bring your personal instrument to perform better in the audition. We will remind you in the confirmation e-mail upon receipt of your online application. VACANCIES Flute | Oboe | Clarinet | Alto & Tenor Saxophones Trumpet | Trombone Percussions Piano | Guitar | Bass Guitar Violin | Viola | Violoncello Voice Traditional Instrumentalist (Gamelan, Gendang, Gambus etc.) Audition Requirements Orkestra Melayu Singapura & Orkestra Melayu Singapura (Youth) Choose two contrasting pieces/studies, or excerpts from several pieces/studies to demonstrate mastery of the range of your instrument, a variety of dynamics and tempo, clear and accurate articulation and high standard of musicianship. There is no piano for accompaniment. Please note that traditional instrumentalist will be tested on their proficiency only. Gamelan instrumentalist will be asked to perform a standard Javanese gamelan repertoire and viva voce as needed. SCALES You should have adequate knowledge of scales. These must be practiced to exam standard and played fluently from memory (wind instruments – tongued or slurred) SIGHT READING You will be given a piece of sight reading for your instrument.
